Context
Heather is an ABTC-Registered Clinical Animal Behaviourist and Dog Training who lives in Wiltshire with her two huskies (Bandit and Alaska), along with her husband and young son.
When she first got in touch, she was balancing a part time job alongside her business and parenting! Coming back from maternity leave, Heather had no clients and very much felt that she was starting from nothing. Heather shared that, despite investing time in a lot of ‘generic learning’ around how to improve her business, she wasn’t sure how to actually implement any of it.
Heather dreamed of being able to leave her part time job so that she could focus on her business as her sole income but was understandably worried about not having enough clients to pay the bills.
She needed a plan…
Working together
Heather signed up to my 1:1 coaching programme, Unleash Your Potential, which has been designed to help self employed dog trainers and animal behaviourists have success with their businesses through a supportive and structured approach.
As a fellow industry professional, it was immediately apparent how much Heather had to offer her clients and their dogs. However, as a business consultant and strategist, it was also very obvious what tweaks needed to be made for Heather to turn her business into one that could potentially be relied up on as her sole source of income.
Working together, we set clear and challenging goals, based on what would give Heather the confidence that she needed in her business, in order to resign from her part-time employed job.
These goals included:
a steady stream of bookings coming in
bookings for at least a month in advance
consistent earnings that at least matched her other income
savings equivalent to a few months’ pay… just in case
Once Heather had refined what she wanted her business to look like, we set out a plan to get there, taking a step-by-step, layered approach. After all, getting the foundations right is essential before we can start to build.
So, with this in mind (and never afraid of a bit of hard work!), Heather updated her services, increased her prices, threw herself into marketing and set up systems to make everything as seamless as possible (both for her and her potential clients)… oh and she created a whole new website for herself in one weekend, using the guidance included in the programme!
Yep, she certainly embraced the challenge and, wow… it was worth it!
Outcome
Before long, enquiries started flowing in, press features were secured and that all-important savings pot was growing nicely. When we wrapped up our time together, Heather said that working with me had not only ‘completely revolutionised’ her business but also that she now had ‘the confidence to keep growing’.
But it doesn’t end there…
A month or so later, Heather called me so say that she was handing in her notice - she’d met all of her goals!
Even better, since then, her business has continued to go from strength to strength.
I caught up with Heather again a few months after we finished the programme for an update on how her life and business had changed, as a result of our time together. Here’s what she said…
‘It’s been an amazing journey!
Working with you allowed me to quit my employed job and run my business full time. It has hugely increased my number of enquiries and also attracted the right sort of clients.
It also gave me the confidence to raise my prices, so I'm not needing to see anywhere near as many clients which has, in turn, helped improve my work life balance (although there’s still some work to be done there!). It’s also helped me to streamline my systems so I'm now spending less time on admin.
Overall, it's made me much happier - I'm now pursuing my passion, doing a job I love, and feel in control of my earnings and hours.
